The man detained for impersonation and trespass at Embakasi Garrison has a warrant of arrest after he failed to appear in a Makadara court over a criminal case facing him.
The warrant was issued against Willington Kimtai Kipyego who has a pending case in court where he was charged with being in possession of a fake firearm.
Kimtai was arrested in 2021 by officers at Ruai Police Station who took him to court where he absconded in 2022 and has allegedly been on the run.
Officers from the station on Tuesday went for him as their colleagues at Kilimani Police Station where he was initially being held, waited to be furnished with proper information regarding the impersonation and trespass offenses.
“It is true the man has a warrant of arrest, my officers have gone for him, and he is likely to be presented in court tomorrow (Wednesday),” said Ruai Sub County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCIO) Benard Yugi.
Even as Kimtai was being tossed from one police station to another questions were raised about the identity of influential individuals who allegedly enabled him to gain unrestricted access to military barracks in Nairobi and Mombasa.
The man’s cover was blown on Sunday at Embakasi Garrison where he was found with a fake Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) identification card. He has been donning military uniforms, suspected to have been obtained from a former soldier dismissed from the military.
On Tuesday the military said Kimtai was seized while attempting to gain unauthorised access to Embakasi Garrison.
“The matter is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities. As investigations are still in their very early stages, it would be premature to draw any conclusions or provide substantive details at this time,” read a statement from KDF’s Strategic Communications.
According to the military, security agencies are addressing the matter in line with established protocols.
Kilimani SCIO Hussein Mahat said since Kimtai was arrested within Embakasi area, they had requested the military to let their colleagues at Embakasi Police Station handle the matter.
“We have asked them (military) to furnish us with all documents and items recovered from the suspect to be used as exhibit in court. Meanwhile, he has been taken to Ruai Police Station for execution of the warrant of arrest over a criminal case before court,” said
