Murang’a County government has proposed reduced water tariffs following complaints by residents over the high prices of the commodity.

In a notice, it invites public comments on tariff review following a series of deliberations between the county government, Wasreb and the four water service providers.

Murang’a West, Gatamathi, Gatanga and Murang’a South water companies will be affected by the review of the tariffs that are in operation after they were approved by the stakeholders.

The residents served by the four service providers have been asked to provide comments through the county secretary’s office

The proposal on tariff review protests started last year after the public forums on the alleged exorbitant tariffs,  forcing many to go without water.

In the proposed review, Gatanga water will be affected most after the proposed cost, as the rates are Sh120 to Sh70, Murang’a west, Sh90  per unit to Sh70.

Gatamathi water charges remain at Sh 60 per unit.

Murang’a South Water cost per unit will be reduced from Sh107 to Sh88 following the ongoing conflict with the local seeking for low tariffs and they be allowed piped water for irrigation..

Murang'a Water (Muwasco) which supplies water in Murang’a municipality and parts of Maragua, will not be affected by the tariff review as there were no complaints raised by the water users.

The County Secretary Dr Newton Mwangi says the reviewed tariff period is one year from the date of commencement.

“The county government wants to be fair and allow the public to give in their wish on the tariffs,’ said Mwangi.
